Disavow File Review
Explanation & Implementation Guide
Explanation
Spammy or low-quality backlinks can significantly harm your website’s SEO and online reputation. If not addressed, these backlinks may negatively affect your site’s ranking and credibility with search engines. A disavow file review involves assessing your current disavow file to ensure it accurately reflects the links that should be disregarded by search engines. Regularly reviewing your disavow file helps maintain a healthy backlink profile, improving your SEO performance and preserving a positive online reputation.
Implementation Guide
Log in to Google Search Console:
- Access your Google Search Console account associated with your Shopify website.
Navigate to Disavow Links Tool:
- Paste the following URL in your browser’s address bar to access the Disavow Links tool:
https://search.google.com/search-console/disavow-links
Choose Property:
- Select the property (website) for which you want to review the disavow file.
Download Existing Disavow File:
- If you already have a disavow file, click to download it for review. If you don’t have an existing disavow file, proceed with the next steps.
Fixing the Issue
Identifying Unwanted Backlinks with Google Search Console:
- Access “Links” Section: Navigate to the “Links” section and choose “External Links” in the left-hand menu.
- Review Backlink Data: Analyze the list of external links pointing to your site. Identify any new or existing links from spammy or low-quality domains.
- Export Backlink Data: Export the backlink data for a more detailed analysis. This can be done within Google Search Console or using other tools for comprehensive data.
Updating the Disavow File:
- Open the Existing Disavow File: If you already have a disavow file, open it using a text editor like Notepad or TextEdit.
- Review and Remove Entries: Review each entry in the disavow file. If certain domains or links are no longer deemed harmful (e.g., they are now trustworthy or no longer exist), remove them from the file.
- Add New Entries: If you discover new spammy or low-quality backlinks, add them to your disavow file using the following syntax:
- domain: spammydomain.com
- link: http://example.com/spammy-link
Save the updated Disavow file:
- Uploading the Updated Disavow File to Google Search Console
- Access Disavow Links Tool: Return to the “Disavow Links” tool in Google Search Console.
- Choose Property: Select the property for which you’ve updated the disavow file.
- Upload Updated Disavow File: Click on “Choose file” and upload the updated disavow file. Confirm the action.
